Mulateiro is a tree with many uses. Reaches 30 meters in height and was used as a source of timber of high density.
It's known for its ability to regenerate completely and lose its bark annually. The bark is smooth (as if it were polished), and changes color throughout the year as they mature (changed from green to brown). This species is typical of Amazon in Brazil, Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador.

The bark of mulateiro contains a large amount of tannins that give it an astringent effect or annoying. Recently, has been documented a large amount of phenols and organic acids in the plant demonstrated the antibacterial properties, antifungal and insecticidal. Phenols have been isolated which showed a potent antioxidant action, which could explain the traditional use to stop the aging process of the skin.

So far there have been only two published studies on mulateiro. In 2001, researchers have reported that a potent antifungal activity in vitro against 11 of the most common skin fungi and yeasts.
In 2003, were discovered several new elements called phyto-seco iridoidi, three of which are owned by active against Trypansoma cruzi, a parasitic tropical.

The use of the bark of mulateiro is well rooted in native culture, which is also used as a component in the mixture of ayahuasca, as well as in several of the folk medicine remedies.
In the Amazon, the bark reduced mush is applied locally to treat cuts, wounds and burns, and is deemed to possess antifungal and healing qualities. The Indians operate a tea made with the bark on the body after the bath and leave to dry in the sun: it forms a thin film on the bodies which are considered to help fight the effects of aging, pests and fungus infections.
The natives use a decoction of bark to combat diabetes. Make boil 1 kg of bark in 10 liters of water until the decoction is reduced to four liters. They believe that if drunk daily for three consecutive months this decoction can be a cure for diabetes.

Today, in mulateiro Peruvian herbal medicine is used for different purposes.
Recently attracted the interest of scientists and designers of natural products for body care. In February 2006, was approved by the EU as an ingredient that can be used in cosmetic products.
